| Why the name '3 rivers'? In the year 1607, the first permanent English colony in North America was established near here and named Jamestowne. During the years 1608 - 9 the colony's leader, Capt. John Smith, began to map and name the rivers and lands of the area. One of the major rivers of this area he named 'Elizabeth' in honor of the English Queen. The Elizabeth River is formed of three branches, Eastern branch, Southern branch and Western branch. These '3 rivers' have seen a lot happen in the history of this nation. From the first landing of the colonists, the war for independence, the growth of shipping and commerce, the nation's first navy yard, the engagement of the first ironclad warships, and the final resting place of the ironclad CSS Virginia. | |||||||||
